The Storm

Thunder and lightning boomed around Camp Wilderocke, shaking the cabin roofs to the ground. The campers of the Galaxy Cabin huddled around their meeting area, waiting for Bryce to come back with news. Rain slammed against the windows, and water dripped through the roofs into the cups, bowls, and other makeshift bowls they could find around the cabin. Candles flickered, lighting up the dark cabin. The power had gone out only a few minutes ago, and everyone had their flashlights ready to go in case the candles wore out eventually too.

Wendy hoped, although it was the smallest sliver of hope any of the campers had, that the storm would pass quickly. She wanted to go out into the woods again with Robin. The girls had planned to go out and fix up their little hiding area, but now, Wendy feared it would be flooded out by the storm.

A huge flash of lightning lit up the cabin, and Wendy scooted closer to her friends. The rain drummed on the roof above them, while wind shook the trees around the cabin. Creaking and whistling echoed outside. Lee grabbed his guitar and strummed it, hoping to drown out the rain tapping on the windows all around them. Colin started to hum and everyone joined in, singing. Thunder roared outside, interrupting the music.

A light knock pounded on the cabin door and a shadow appeared at the window, peering inside. Sam jumped up, running over to the door. She threw it open, and the wind pulled it from her hands, slamming against the cabin wall. A soaking wet Bryce entered the cabin, carrying a huge plastic tub. He closed the door behind him and sighed. “I’ve got good news and bad news,” he said. “Bad news is, all camp activities are cancelled for the rest of the day.” Bryce set the plastic tub down on the floor and took his raincoat off. “Logan says the storm’s here to stay for another couple of hours.”

Everyone groaned.

“What about lunch and dinner?” Thomas shouted out. “Are we going to starve to death?”

“Nope!” Bryce said. “They’ll come around with lunch and complimentary snacks from the Snack Shack later. Dinner depends on how stormy it is around that time.”

“Do you think it’ll be better later?” Kenzie asked.

“Hopefully!” Bryce said. “As long as there’s no thunder and lighting by dinner, we’re good to leave the cabins.”

Wendy eyed the box on the floor. Water slipped down the blue sides, forming a little pool on the wooden cabin floor. “What’s in the box?” she asked.

Bryce grinned. “That brings me to the good news!” he cried, pulling the plastic tub over to the table of campers. He opened up the lid, revealing a stack of different board games, craft materials, blankets, and a lantern. “Logan handed out emergency supplies,” he said. “We’ve got blankets, an extra lantern, and a box full of fun!” He laughed. “We’ll have plenty of things to keep us busy.”

Everyone dove into the plastic tub, bringing out the different games and craft supplies. They set up a few gaming areas around the cabin, carefully making sure they weren’t under any leaks. Felix jumped and ran to the boy’s side of the cabin, returning with a small backpack. He cleared the table, and pulled out a large piece of graph paper, a folder, a few books, and a large bag of dice. He opened up a notebook, and grinned. “Anyone want to play Dungeons and Dragons?” he asked, eyeing his friends in excitement.

Curiosity got the better of them, and one by one, the campers surrounded the table. Felix explained the rules and soon everyone was hooked. As the storm raged on outside, the campers of the Galaxy Cabin created their own story, adventuring in their imagination rather than out on the campground, fighting monsters, uncovering mysteries, learning magic, and forming bonds of friendship.
