Pine needles and leaves crunched under Wendy’s yellow sneakers as she followed the crowd of campers to the cabins. Several of them carried suitcases and backpacks, while others sat on the porches of the large cabins, already wearing their new camp shirts. Summer was finally here, which meant Camp Wilderocke would be full of life once more. Wendy clutched her duffel bag in one hand, and fixed her own backpack. She continued her trek down the trail, searching for the smallest cabin at the bottom of the hill.
Wendy stopped outside the cabin right on the outskirts of the forest. It was the furthest from all the cabins, but she nor her cabin mates minded. A green flag drifted lazily in the summer breeze, while muffled music played from the screen door. She climbed the creaky steps, and pushed open the door carefully.
A few other campers ran around, in and out of the room with all the bunks, while music played from the old stereo on the table in the middle of the cabin. A few new couches were in the little living area, most of them covered in bags from the other girls.
On the opposite side of the couches was the room full of bunks for the boys. Bryce, one of their cabin leaders, swept out a few leaves and dust into the main area, while Kenzie, the other cabin leader sat at the table, sorting out papers onto a few other clipboards.
The boys laughed as something crashed. Wendy shook her head, and pushed open the door to the girls side. She dragged her duffle bag over to her favorite bunk, on the bottom and next to the window.
Robin, her best friend, was already there, setting up a new set of glow in the dark stars above her bed. Amy and Andy, the twins, hung a few twinkle lights up on their bunk. Sam burst into the cabin, holding a small white box over her head. “I have the best decoration for our cabin this year!” she called out. She set the box down in the room, pulled out a small white machine, found the nearest outlet, and plugged it in. “Hit the lights!”
Kira, nearest to the light switch, turned the lights off, while Wendy and Robin pulled down the blinds, engulfing the bunks in almost total darkness. Sam pushed a button. Lights flickered on, and soon, the cabin was covered in small twinkling stars and galaxy clouds. Every few seconds the cloud and stars changed colors, swirling over and around the bunks.
“Now we’re officially the Galaxy Cabin!” Sam cried.
They all got back to work, adding more personal touches to their summer home for the next month. Kira added a few new paintings on the walls, while Amy and Andy set up their new cameras on their shelf. Sam added a few more small twinkle lights and glow in the dark stars to the low cabin ceiling. Lights and posters covered the walls, and even as they crossed the creaky floorboards, it was starting to feel like home again.
Wendy turned to look out her window by her bunk, staring at the trees that stretched endlessly to the sky. A few birds hopped from branch to branch, tweeting and chirping at one another. She smiled. Maybe this year she would see a new bird.
The girls raced each other outside, adding their finishing touches to the cabin porch. Amy and Andy carried their cameras outside, setting them on a tripod. The boys all tumbled out of the cabin too, joining the girls on the porch. One by one, each camper of the green Galaxy Cabin hung up their stars. All twelve campers stood back, admiring their work swinging in the summer breeze.
